Dislike, Dislike, Dislike

Standard

I just finished TMOED. I have a string of emotions upon finishing this book. There are so many predictions I want to make for how Dickens would have finished it. The most obvious choice for the person responsible for the disappearance/assumed death of Edwin is Jasper. I mean Princess Puff Puff let out that subtle hint a long time ago. I want to believe it was Jasper and I wan’t to mentally hate him forever. But, was Dickens ever really that obvious? Every book of his that I have ever read, he surprises me. I never expect what he gives me and am always shocked my his plot twisting turns. So, did Jasper do it? To me, it’s the only plausible option. But, once again, Dickens is not always plausible. I think there is definitely a connection between the book starting out with all of the opiates and “ending” with it as well. I just can’t put it all together. ANGST, ANGST, ANGST,! I think I can rule out some suspects – Rosa, Helena, Rev. Crisparkle, Twinkleton, Grewgious. As for everyone else, I just can’t give up on them. I guess I am holding out for Dickens to blow my mind with a shocking twist that I never saw coming. I’m pretty sure I will be holding out for quite a while. (Insert sad face here.)

So, what about you guys? Who is responsible?

Spoiler Alert

WARNING!

Ok, so it was obvious that I made a huge mistake last week. Somehow, my wires got crossed, and I read way ahead in OMF. Not only did I read it, I of course had to write a blog post about it. Well, WARNING! Do not read it. I just got around to finishing last weeks reading, along with this weeks, and I have really spoiled some things. I have tried to do a mental erase, but it’s just not happening. I will not further spoil these secrets for my fellow classmates, I just felt you guys deserved a heads up.

On another note, I know this is so last week, but the Boffins are really cracking me up. They inherit all of this money and what’s the first thing they think the should do? The most obvious thing – buy a baby! I literally laughed out loud. (Not just LOL, I really laughed.) It’s also kind of creepy that they want to name him John Harmon. That name is like a constant reminder to the kid : “HEY! You wouldn’t be here if we didn’t get that pile of cash from our boss when he died!” Ah, the irony of the whole situation is hilarious. Not to mention- I know a few other things about these people, from on down the road. Ugh, I am a walking spoiler.

Casting Call!

Standard

Ok, I have tried to thoughtfully choose an actor/actress for each character in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. It was so much harder than I imagined it would be!

Rosa Bud : Dakota Fanning. Dakota has that young, prissy, attractive vibe about her. I can vividly picture her playing this role. Check out Dakota.

Edwin Drood : I must admit, I struggled with this one. He has so many different characteristics and I couldn’t decide who to cast for him. So, I chose Macaulay Culkin. I know you are thinking I am crazy but HEAR ME OUT! Obviously, he has had some struggles with the law lately, but if he could clean his act up, I think him and Dakota Fanning would be a perfect betrothed couple! Check out Macaulay.

Mr. Jasper : Easiest one by far. Johnny Depp and his mysterious self is perfect for this role! Check out Johnny.

Durdles : I really enjoy the character of Durdles, so I had to cast him well. Obviously, I see him as a free spirit, who enjoys his alcohols, and just blows with the wind. HELLO Steven Tyler. Check out Steven.

Helena : I see Helena as a sidekick to Rosa and with a sweet heart. I chose to cast Demi Lovato for her. Check out Demi.

Nevelle : For Nevelle, I obviously need him to look similiar to Helena in some sense. Also, I need him to be appealing with his voice and attitude. So, I chose Nick Jonas. Check out Nick.

Mrs. Crisparkle : Ok, I know in the book that Mrs. Crisparkle is dainty and fragile, but when casting an elderly woman, who can resist Betty White?! Obviously, I choose Betty White! Check out Betty.

Septimus Crisparkle : When I think of Sept, I think of a middle-aged, handsome, and respectable man. I would definitely cast Kyle Chandler for this role. (Some of you may remember him from Friday Night Lights or Super 8) Check out Kyle.

Miss Twinkleton : When I think of Miss Twinkleton, I think of an older woman, who knows how to keep things in order. I think the perfect fit for Miss Twinkleton is Imelda Staunton. (Most of you know her from playing Delores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series) Check out Imelda.

Deputy : Deputy is quite frankly one of my favorite characters. I needed to cast someone who was young and quirky. I chose Freddie Highmore. Check out Freddie.

Mr. Honeythunder : In this book, Mr. Honeythunder really gets on my nerves. I don’t like his cocky attitude or his comments. For these reasons I wanted to cast Justin Beiber, but since he is too young I went with Gerard Butler. Check out Gerard.

Mrs. Tisher : I picture Mrs. Tisher and a sweet, older lady with quirky habits. I chose Joan Rivers minus her bad attitude! Check out Joan.

Mr. Sapsea: Ok, everyone thinks Sapsea is a conceited and cocky man. Who better to play him then Ben Affleck? Not necessarily because Ben is cocky in his everyday life. But, in most of his movies, he does play the man in charge. Check out Ben.

Mr. Grewgious : I like this man, despite him being connected to Rosa. 😉 I see him as being a grounded, average man. I would cast Richard Gere. Check out Richard.

Princess Puffer : Even though she is not very prominent, I had already cast her in my mind, so I couldn’t resist adding her to my casting call! Tell me that Helena Bonham Carter isn’t a good fit?! (You probably remember her from Harry Potter as Bellatrix Lestrange) Check out Helena.

Hope you guys enjoy my casting choices! If only I could call all these people up and make me a movie!

I can hear the church bells ringing…. 10 minute post

Standard

I am obsessed with the theme of the cathedral in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. I believe Dickens is using this to personify so many things. Possibly him making things right in his life, considering he was about to die? I obviously can’t be sure of this. But, I can’t pinpoint why he would choose the church to be the focal point of this story. The Mystery of Edwin Drood has a gloomy, depressing, mysterious, sometimes sad undertone. To me all of the adjectives directly contradict with my thoughts of the church. So, why add it in this book? The disappearance of Edwin has further heightened my curiosity and I have many predictions for the reasons surrounding his disappearance. But, back to the cathedral, I think I am so fascinated with this cathedral because I believe it symbolizes so much within the characters. There is so much “sin” surrounding and embedded in the city of Cloisterham and so many lies being told. Perhaps, instead of going into the cathedral for appearances, these people should go in there for repentence? I believe Dickens places this as the focal point to let readers know that trouble and bad things are coming… and maybe the church is a place to make those things right? I really can’t pin point the reason, but I love that this cathedral is in the middle of everything. Perhaps Edwin is stoned into the walls? Doubtful…but that would be pretty interesting.

Stuck in the Friend Zone

Standard

Does anyone else share my frustration about the romance between Edwin and Rosa?! I am dying for these two to get together already! Poor Edwin, he had the special ring in his pocket and everything. Why, Dickens, why?? Once she started talking, I knew what was coming. Here Edwin is trying to do the right thing and gets stuck directly in the friend zone. Come on, nobody wants them to be brother and sister. We all want them to be “lovers and friends.” ( Shout out to Usher, Lil Jon, and Ludacris) I can’t help but feel like this romance isn’t over yet. Will Rosa get tired of the mundane men left in this city? Let’s hope so. Deep down, I know Edwin has feelings for Rosa. He was going to pull out that ring and solidify their betrothal. The whole time I was reading, I was screaming inside. “pull out the ring, Edwin. It will change her mind!!” but, he didn’t and they parted ways. Obviously a mystery is going to soon take place, but will it involve the love between Edwin and Rosa? So, I guess, as of now, Edwin and Rosa’s relationship status on Facebook would be “It’s Complicated.” Throw me a bone Dickens, I’m dying here!!

Do I Dazzle You?

First, let me be clear that my allegiance to serial books lies within the Harry Potter series – no question about it. With that being said, I do enjoy indulging in the Twilight series every now and then. I have read the series once and promptly pledged my loyalty to Edward. I am a team Edward kind of gal and have the t-shirt to prove it. What I love most about this series is the love triangle between Edward, Jacob, and Bella. Here you have this homely-looking girl being pursued intensely by two dashing men. (Of course one is a vampire and the other a wolf, but what does that matter?) Anyhow, what makes this love fest so interesting, is you never know who is going to come out on top. Who will Bella choose? For those of you who have read this series, obviously she chooses Edward. (Validating my choice to be Team Edward) But, the chase leading up to the final decision gives the reader an added bonus.

Like in Twilight, the love triangle in The Mystery of Edwin Drood has quickly caught my attention. There is a lot going on in this story and I can’t help but focus on this group of people. However, I have not yet decided who to pledge my allegiance to. Obviously, Rosa is a very sought after woman. Mr. Jasper, Neville, and of course Edwin all have all showed particular interest in this little lady. But, who will she ultimately choose? I honestly have no prediction at this point. Mr. Jasper is creepy and unnerving, so I think he is out. However, his distrurbing persistence may scare Rosa into choosing him. Neville is an alright guy. He is new to town and his background is full of holes. I have yet to decide what to make of him. But, I’m not counting him out just yet. Lastly, is Edwin. Techinically, Edwin already has the upper hand. I mean, he is betrothed to her. Yet, I feel a sense of disconnect between the two. I don’t think either of them are happy about this arrangement. But, can they make it work and follow through? I can’t answer that yet either. Deep down, I think my vote is swaying toward Edwin at this point. I like to root for the underdog and there is something sweet and attractive about this character.

What about you guys? Who are you pledging your loyalty to?

The Duggars… A modern day Crisparkle family?

Standard

I’m not sure how many of you have seen 19 Kids and Counting on TLC, but if you haven’t – you’re missing out! I will give a brief rundown of the show for you newbies. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have 19 children. Michelle has birthed every one of them and I think she might have a set of twins in there. (to be honest, I can’t keep track myself) Anyway, the Duggars’ have structured their family to live by God’s word and do plenty of philanthropic work in their community, state, and country. I’m sure you are asking what does this have to do with The Mystery of Edwin Drood?? Well, I can’t help but think/picture the Duggar family when reading about the Crisparkles’.

We have mama Crisparkle who has popped out 7 little Crisparkles. Her youngest son Septimus is obviously a man of God – as he is a reverend. I assume he was raised in a Christian home, since he chose to go into the ministry. And Mrs. Crisparkle in a philanthropic woman, herself and obviously has a love for children. Not only because she has seven of them, but because she agrees to let one live with her – even though he is the son of an obese, aggravating, demanding philanthropic “brother.”

All the similarities between the families, make me enjoy the story that much more. I enjoy me some reality TV and I will relate anything and everything I can to it. Although, I promise not to relate anything to The Jersey Shore….. At leastI will try not to. 😉
